A Little Bit of Charcoal
A Little Bit of Charcoal
Sometimes it is just fun to draw!
What none of us knew at the moment that this first class of a new six week session would be the last of the season! The Carona 19 virus put a halt to our gathering! Guess we should always make the most of the thing we are doing and enjoying, it could come to an abrupt end for some reason!
Back poses are not easy. Many times the models posture is too good and they will not slump or relax enough to get an interesting image. This model had no trouble doing that. His hair do aded much to the poses. The last on below “The Thinker” was my favorite. It’s got everything, foreshortening, lots of deep shadows an interesting hand position and an “attitude” as Ellen Soderquist would say.
What do you do with figure studies? I have a stack of sketchbooks 15 inches high! Some are terrible, some good,
but all have been a joy to do.

Make models are not an everyday thing! So when we get one it is a treat. Especially when they are really good! I arrived really tired at the class and did not bother to bring my oil paints for sketches in the last two long poses. But, I really got into enjoying the feel of the vine charcoal. The two drawings here were both done from the same pose in a 45 minute period. I loved his out-stretched arms and his tucked toes behind his knee. The first on is at the right the second is above. Sometimes you should not draw what you at first think is the most interesting. He was really thin but well muscled and it make for easy indentification of the structure of his body. That is sometimes very difficult to see in female models. My tiredness went away and the three hours that we spend doing this flew by as usual.
