Sketching a live performance.
After many years of sitting in seats around the “horseshoe? balcony, we had to choose new seats. A well kept secret is that the first rows on the side sections are the least expensive in the entire hall. So we sat in row A seats 1 and 2 for several years. A perfect position, under the soles of the violinists feet for sketching!
Sketching live at a constantly moving venue like a symphony is not the easiest thing to do. In translating my sketches from the little moleskin sketch book into watercolors I found that often there was information missing or slightly askew. The individual sketches were made in just a few minutes, mostly under 15 minutes and many in much shorter time. They are all in pencil and are shown in a earlier blogs. .
One of the qualities that I enjoy about drawing musicians is that they are so wrapped up in the music and their body language mirrors what the music is doing. The painting above comes a little closed to getting this feeling that any of the previous attempts. The colors the stroke and the musicians themselves are so dynamic.
